FMX for iPad: Main Dashboard

Updated Yesterday · 6 min readBeginner

When something goes wrong with FMX for iPadOS, diagnostic logs and systematic troubleshooting are your best tools for identifying and resolving issues. This guide covers how to collect logs, resolve common iPad-specific problems, and report issues to Foto Master support.

Enabling Diagnostic Logging

FMX for iPadOS includes a diagnostic logging system that records detailed information about app behavior, errors, and system events:

  1. Open Global Settings from the main dashboard
  2. Navigate to the About tab
  3. Enable the Diagnostic Logging toggle
  4. Logs are written to the app's local storage and can be accessed for review or sharing

Tip: Enable diagnostic logging before an event if you are troubleshooting an issue or testing a new setup. Logs capture detailed timing, error codes, and system state that are invaluable for diagnosing intermittent problems.

Log Collection Procedure

To collect and share logs with Foto Master support:

  1. Reproduce the issue with diagnostic logging enabled (if possible)
  2. Return to Global Settings > About
  3. Use the Export Logs or Share Logs option to package the log files
  4. Send the exported log file to Foto Master support, along with a description of the issue

Include the following information with your log submission:

  • iPad model and iPadOS version
  • FMX app version (shown in the About tab)
  • Description of the issue -- What happened, what you expected, and the steps to reproduce
  • When it started -- Whether the issue is new or has always occurred
  • Event name -- Which event was active when the issue occurred

Common iPad-Specific Issues

Selection Screen Not Working on iOS 18+

Symptom: The selection screen appears blank, does not display options correctly, or touch targets are misaligned after updating to iOS 18 or later.

Cause: An aspect ratio mismatch between the layout design and the iPad's native screen ratio. iPad uses a 3:4 screen aspect ratio, while many templates and selection screen layouts are designed for the 9:16 ratio used by phones. iOS 18 introduced rendering changes that made this mismatch more visible.

Resolution:

  1. Open your event in the Cloud Workflow Builder
  2. Navigate to the Selection Screen step in your workflow
  3. Check the layout dimensions -- ensure they are designed for the 3:4 aspect ratio (or whichever ratio matches your iPad's capture settings)
  4. If the layout was designed for 9:16, recreate it at 3:4 proportions
  5. Save the event, then sync on the iPad to pull the updated configuration

Tip: When designing workflows intended for iPad, always verify that selection screen layouts use iPad-compatible aspect ratios. The Cloud Workflow Builder shows platform indicators -- use them to confirm compatibility.

No Sound with Bluetooth Microphone

Symptom: Video recordings capture no audio, or audio is extremely quiet, when using a Bluetooth microphone with FMX for iPadOS.

Resolution: Work through these seven steps in order. Test audio after each step to identify which resolves the issue:

  1. Check workflow configuration -- Open your event in the Cloud Workflow Builder and verify that the Record Video step has audio recording enabled. If audio capture is disabled in the workflow, no microphone input will be recorded regardless of hardware setup.

  2. Verify audio output device -- Open iPad Settings > Bluetooth and confirm the Bluetooth microphone is connected and listed as the active audio input. If multiple Bluetooth devices are paired, the iPad may be routing audio to the wrong device.

  3. Test with the native Camera app -- Close FMX, open the built-in iPad Camera app, and record a short video. Play it back to confirm the Bluetooth microphone captures audio outside of FMX. If the native Camera app also has no sound, the issue is with the Bluetooth device or iPad settings, not FMX.

  4. Check microphone permissions -- Open iPad Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and confirm FMX is listed and enabled. If FMX does not appear in the list, reinstalling the app will trigger a new permission request.

  5. Verify input source in FMX -- In FMX Global Settings, confirm the correct audio input source is selected. If FMX is defaulting to the built-in microphone instead of the Bluetooth device, manually select the Bluetooth microphone.

  6. Test Bluetooth hardware -- Pair the Bluetooth microphone with a different device (phone or another iPad) and test recording. If it fails on other devices as well, the microphone hardware may be faulty, or its battery may be low.

  7. Reinstall FMX -- If all other steps pass, delete FMX from the iPad and reinstall it from the App Store. This resets all permissions and internal audio routing. Sign in again after reinstalling and syncing your event.

Camera Permissions Denied

Symptom: FMX shows a black screen or an error indicating it cannot access the camera.

Resolution:

  1. Open iPad Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera
  2. Find FMX in the list and enable camera access
  3. If FMX does not appear in the list, delete and reinstall the app to trigger a new permission request
  4. Restart FMX after granting permission

Tip: When setting up a new iPad for booth use, launch FMX once and grant all permission prompts (camera, microphone, notifications) before configuring your event. This avoids permission-related interruptions during live operation.

App Crashes or Freezes

Symptom: FMX stops responding, closes unexpectedly, or freezes during operation.

Resolution:

  1. Force-close and relaunch -- Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to open the app switcher, then swipe FMX away to force-close it. Relaunch the app.
  2. Check available storage -- Open iPad Settings > General > iPad Storage. FMX needs free space for capturing and processing media. If storage is critically low, offload unused apps or transfer media to free space.
  3. Update iPadOS -- Ensure your iPad is running the latest available iPadOS version. Apple frequently releases stability fixes.
  4. Update FMX -- Check the App Store for FMX updates. Bug fixes and stability improvements are released regularly.
  5. Re-sync the event -- A corrupted event configuration can cause crashes. Delete the event's local data by syncing a fresh copy from the cloud.
  6. Restart the iPad -- A full device restart clears system-level caches and can resolve issues caused by memory pressure or background processes.

If crashes persist after these steps, collect diagnostic logs and contact support.

Reporting Issues to Support

When contacting Foto Master support about an iPad issue:

  1. Enable diagnostic logging and reproduce the issue
  2. Export logs from the About tab
  3. Prepare details:
    • iPad model and iPadOS version
    • FMX app version
    • Event name and workflow description
    • Steps to reproduce the issue
    • Screenshots or screen recordings showing the problem
  4. Submit via the Foto Master support channel with logs and details attached

The more information you provide, the faster support can diagnose and resolve the issue.

Moving FMX to Another iPad

To transfer your FMX setup from one iPad to another:

  1. On the old iPad -- Open FMX, go to Global Settings > About, and log out of your account. This releases the device license.
  2. On the new iPad -- Download FMX from the App Store and install it.
  3. Sign in with your Foto Master account credentials.
  4. Sync your event -- Select and sync your event to download the full configuration and assets to the new device.
  5. Reconfigure Global Settings -- Device-level settings (camera, printer, appearance) do not transfer between iPads. Configure them on the new device to match your booth setup.

Tip: Always log out on the old iPad before setting up the new one. FMX licenses are per-device, so failing to log out may prevent sign-in on the new iPad until the old license is released.
