Nikon Camera: Setup and Connection
Overview
FMX for Windows has built-in support for Nikon DSLR cameras. The Nikon SDK ships inside FMX itself — there is nothing to download or install separately. Just make sure you are running an up-to-date version of FMX for Windows.
Supported Nikon Cameras
See the FMX Supported Camera List for confirmed models. FMX handles live view, photo capture, and video recording for supported Nikon cameras. Exposure settings (ISO, shutter speed, aperture) are configured on the camera body — FMX cannot change them remotely. See Using Nikon and Sony Cameras with FMX for details.
Before You Connect
- Update FMX for Windows to the latest version.
- Set the camera's image quality to JPEG (or JPEG + RAW). RAW-only capture is not supported.
- Turn off the camera's Wi-Fi / SnapBridge connection — some Nikon models disable USB communication while Wi-Fi is on.
- Close any other software that may be using the camera (SnapBridge, Nikon Webcam Utility, Camera Control Pro).
Connecting the Camera
- Connect the camera to the PC via USB (use the cable that came with the camera) and power it on.
- If your camera has a USB mode setting, set it to PTP/MTP: Menu → Setup Menu → USB → MTP/PTP.
- Open FMX → Global Settings → Camera Tab → Refresh. Select your Nikon camera.
- Click Start Live View to confirm.
Troubleshooting
- Camera not found: Update FMX to the latest version, check the USB cable and port, and close any other apps that may be holding the camera.
- Live View error: Charge the battery — some Nikon models disable Live View when the battery is low. Make sure the camera's Wi-Fi is off.
- Photo capture fails: Confirm the camera's image quality includes JPEG. RAW-only is not supported.
- Intermittent disconnection: Replace the USB cable. Use a direct port connection, not a USB hub.
