Using Nikon, Sony, and GoPro Cameras with FMX for Windows

FMX for Windows supports compatible Nikon DSLR/mirrorless cameras, Sony mirrorless cameras, and GoPro HERO9 Black or newer alongside Canon cameras and USB webcams. Each brand uses a different connection method, so prepare the camera before selecting it in FMX.

Important: A camera being visible to Windows does not always mean it is ready for FMX capture. Complete a Live View, Take Photo, and Record Video test with the exact camera, firmware, cable, and workflow before every event.

Before You Begin

Prepare the following:

  • A supported camera with current, stable firmware
  • A formatted memory card with enough free space
  • A charged battery, AC adapter, or dummy battery for long events
  • A short, known-good USB data cable with strain relief
  • FMX for Windows with your event already synced

Close camera utilities and other applications that could claim the device, including manufacturer transfer software, Teams, Zoom, and OBS.

Nikon Setup

  1. Insert a memory card and set image quality to JPEG or JPEG+RAW. FMX uses the JPEG for the workflow.
  2. Set the mode dial to P, S, A, or M; Manual is recommended for consistent event exposure.
  3. Connect the camera by USB and turn it on.
  4. Open Global Settings > Camera and click Refresh.
  5. Select the Nikon entry that reports it is ready for capture, then click Save Changes.

Compatible Nikon cameras can provide Live View, Take Photo, and Record Video. The exact capability depends on the camera and its USB mode. A detection-only Nikon entry means Windows can see the body, but FMX cannot use that entry for booth capture.

Set exposure, white balance, and focus on the camera body when FMX does not expose those controls. FMX Record Video uses the Nikon preview available to FMX; it does not press the camera body's movie-record button.

Sony Setup

  1. Insert a memory card and set the camera to Manual (M) or Aperture Priority (A).
  2. In the Sony setup menu, set the USB connection/control mode to PC Remote.
  3. Disable Wi-Fi control or close Sony software that could hold the camera connection.
  4. Connect the camera by USB and turn it on.
  5. Open Global Settings > Camera, click Refresh, select the Sony camera, and click Save Changes.

FMX supports Live View, Take Photo, and Record Video when the Sony camera provides a remote preview. Supported photo settings such as ISO, aperture, shutter speed, white balance, and image quality appear in the Sony panel. Options that the selected body does not report remain unavailable.

GoPro Setup

FMX for Windows supports GoPro HERO9 Black and newer through a direct USB-C connection.

  1. Insert a formatted SD card.
  2. On the GoPro, set USB Connection to GoPro Connect, not MTP.
  3. Configure photo quality, video resolution, frame rate, digital lens, and stabilization on the GoPro itself.
  4. Connect the GoPro to the Windows PC with a USB-C data cable and turn it on.
  5. Open Global Settings > Camera, click Refresh, and select the GoPro entry.
  6. In the GoPro panel, confirm Connection, Battery, and SD Card status, choose Rotation, and decide whether to enable Delete files from SD card after download.
  7. Click Save Changes.

GoPro Live View, Take Photo, and Record Video use the camera's native capture system. FMX downloads the full-quality media after capture. Native GoPro video uses the GoPro's microphones, not the Windows microphone selected for other camera types.

Do not remove the SD card or disconnect the cable while FMX is downloading media. When automatic deletion is enabled, FMX deletes the camera file only after the download has been verified.

Test the Event Workflow

For every camera brand:

  1. Start Live View and confirm that the preview is correctly framed, rotated, and mirrored.
  2. Run Take Photo and confirm that the captured JPEG reaches Preview or the next processing step.
  3. If the event records video, start and stop a short recording, then play it back with audio.
  4. Complete the workflow through the final layout, sharing, and printing.
  5. Leave the camera connected and idle long enough to confirm that it does not power off.

Troubleshooting

The camera is not listed

  • Click Refresh after connecting and powering on the camera.
  • Try a different USB data cable and a direct computer port.
  • Close manufacturer utilities and video-conferencing applications.
  • Power-cycle the camera, then restart FMX if needed.

Nikon is visible but cannot capture

  • Select the capture-ready Nikon entry rather than a detection-only entry.
  • Use P, S, A, or M mode; insert a memory card; and set JPEG or JPEG+RAW.
  • Disconnect HDMI/TV output and disable wireless transfer features while testing.

Sony does not connect or show Live View

  • Reconfirm PC Remote mode on the camera.
  • Close Sony Imaging Edge or any other remote-control application.
  • Reconnect USB after changing the camera's USB mode.

GoPro connects but has no Live View

  • Confirm that still capture works and that the camera remains in GoPro Connect mode.
  • Allow FMX through Windows Firewall; GoPro preview uses a local UDP stream.
  • Recheck the Live View UDP Port only if Foto Master Support asks you to change it.

Capture succeeds but transfer fails

  • Check memory-card space, USB stability, and battery level.
  • Do not use a charge-only cable.
  • Run another test before enabling automatic GoPro deletion.
