Importing Custom Workflow JSON: Supported Files, Restrictions, and Alternatives

Updated Today · 3 min readAdvanced

The Workflow Builder in Foto Master Cloud lets you export a workflow as a JSON file and import it again to back it up, share it, or move it between FMX for Windows and FMX for iPad. This article explains which JSON files the importer accepts, why edited or externally created files are rejected, and what your options are if you want to use a workflow you built yourself.

Supported Files

The JSON importer only accepts an unchanged workflow export from Foto Master Cloud. Both full and minimal format exports can be imported, and the importer detects the format automatically.

The importer does not accept:

  • JSON files created outside of Foto Master Cloud.
  • Exported workflow files that were edited after export, including files you own.

For instructions on exporting and importing supported files, see Export or Import Workflows Using JSON Files.

Why Edited or External Files Are Rejected

Every workflow exported from Foto Master Cloud includes a digital signature. When you import a file, Foto Master Cloud uses this signature to verify where the file came from and to confirm it has not been changed. The importer also checks the original owner’s sharing permissions.

A JSON file created outside of Foto Master Cloud has no signature, so it cannot be imported. Editing an exported file in any way invalidates its signature, so the edited file is rejected even if the workflow belongs to you.

Note: Uploading the file, dragging it into the upload area, and pasting the JSON text all go through the same check. Switching import methods will not change the result.

Error Messages

Unsigned or edited file: “This file was not exported from this Foto Master Cloud, or its export signature was changed, so it cannot be imported. Export it again from Foto Master Cloud.”
Malformed JSON: An error appears below the import field, and nothing on the canvas changes.

If you see the unsigned or edited file message, export the workflow again from Foto Master Cloud and import the new file without changing it. If you need to import a workflow you built or edited outside of Cloud, use one of the options below.

JSON Import vs. AI Workflow Builder

JSON Import: Loads an exact copy of a signed workflow export. Every step and setting is kept as exported.
AI Workflow Builder: Generates a new workflow using your JSON as a reference. This is paid AI generation, not an exact import, so the result may change some settings or leave out features that are not supported.

If you need an exact copy of a workflow you built outside of Cloud and have an active Support subscription, contact Support. If an approximate workflow you can review and adjust is enough, use the AI Workflow Builder.

Importing a Custom Workflow Through Support

Foto Master Support can review custom workflow JSON files and import them through an authorized Support process.

Note: This service requires an active Support subscription.

  1. Contact Foto Master Support at support@fotomaster.com.
  2. Attach your JSON file, or paste the JSON text into your message.
  3. Include your Cloud account email and the FMX version the workflow is for (FMX for Windows or FMX for iPad).

Support will review the file, validate the resulting workflow, and transfer it to your account. If anything in the file needs to be adjusted, Support will let you know.

Creating a Workflow with the AI Workflow Builder

  1. Log in to Foto Master Cloud and go to Presets.
  2. Open the AI Workflow Builder.
  3. Paste your JSON into the prompt as a reference and ask for a new workflow based on it.
  4. Review every step and setting in the generated workflow.
  5. Save the workflow.

Note: AI generation uses paid credits.

When to Contact Support

If you have an active Support subscription, contact Support at support@fotomaster.com if:

  • You need an exact import of a workflow you built or edited outside of Foto Master Cloud.
  • You see the unsigned or edited file error on a file you exported and did not change.
  • A workflow generated by the AI Workflow Builder is missing steps or settings you need.
