Green Screen vs AI Background Removal in FMX
FMX supports two ways to swap the background behind a guest: a physical green/blue screen processed by the built-in chroma key, or AI Background Removal. Both are available, and the chroma key remains for setups that already rely on a physical backdrop -- but for new events, we recommend AI Background Removal.
This article explains where green screen can be applied in FMX, how the two options compare, and why AI Background Removal is the preferred choice.
Where Green Screen Can Be Applied
In Global Settings > Camera > Chroma Key (Green/Blue Screen), two independent toggles control where chroma key processing runs:
- Enable on Live View -- Removes the backdrop in the live preview the guest sees on screen.
- Enable on Take Photo -- Removes the backdrop in the captured raw photo before it flows into the Final Photo.
Both toggles default to off, so chroma key is fully disabled out of the box. The two toggles can be combined in four ways:
| Enable on Live View | Enable on Take Photo | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Off | Off | No chroma key processing (default) |
| On | Off | Guest sees the replaced background in the preview, but the captured photo keeps the original backdrop |
| Off | On | Live preview shows the raw scene; the captured photo has the backdrop removed |
| On | On | Both the preview and the captured photo have the backdrop removed |
For chroma key tuning (hue, saturation, despill, edge feather, and so on), see the Chroma Key Guide.
Why We Recommend AI Background Removal
For new events, AI Background Removal is the preferred option. The comparison favors AI on every dimension that matters for a photo booth.
Quality
AI Background Removal produces noticeably cleaner cutouts than chroma key. A physical green screen is sensitive to lighting unevenness, shadows, fabric wrinkles, and any green tones in clothing or accessories -- each of those produces patchy edges or partial transparency on the subject. AI detects the subject directly and is not affected by backdrop conditions at all.
Speed
AI Background Removal completes in roughly 3-4 seconds per photo and delivers a finished cutout straight into the Final Photo. No backdrop calibration or live tuning is required during the event.
Setup
AI Background Removal needs nothing beyond the camera. There is no backdrop to transport, hang, light, or smooth out. It works against any wall, in any venue, indoors or outdoors -- which removes a large category of on-site setup failures (uneven lighting, wrinkles, color spill).
Wardrobe
Chroma key fails on guests wearing the same color as the backdrop -- green clothing, blue accessories, painted nails, novelty wigs. AI Background Removal ignores clothing color entirely.
Cost
Each AI Background Removal use consumes a small per-photo credit cost. For event-scale volumes, total credit spend stays low relative to the cost of the backdrop, lighting, transport, and the operator time required to set up and tear down a physical green screen.
See Understanding AI Credits for current credit costs.
When Green Screen Still Makes Sense
The chroma key option remains in FMX for setups that already have a physical green screen rigged and tuned -- for example, a fixed studio install where the backdrop is permanent and the lighting is dialed in. In that environment, keeping the existing chroma key workflow is reasonable. For everything else, default to AI Background Removal.
Recommendation Summary
- New events: Leave both Enable on Live View and Enable on Take Photo off in Global Settings. Use AI Background Removal in the workflow instead.
- Existing green screen setups: The chroma key feature continues to work as before, and the Live View/Take Photo toggles let you control exactly where it applies.
- Mixed or uncertain conditions: Choose AI Background Removal. It is more forgiving of venue lighting, guest wardrobe, and backdrop condition.
