How to Connect and Use a GoPro with FMX for Windows

Updated Today · 5 min read

FMX for Windows supports GoPro HERO9 Black and newer over USB. A GoPro can provide Live View, capture full-quality photos, record native video with the GoPro microphones, and transfer the completed media directly into the FMX workflow.

GoPro capture differs from a webcam or DSLR preview recording: the GoPro records to its own SD card first, then FMX downloads the finished file.

Current setting behavior: Configure photo quality, video resolution, frame rate, digital lens, HDR or Log profile, framing, HyperSmooth, and photo output on the GoPro itself. FMX 2.0.53 switches between the camera’s Photo and Video preset groups but does not change those quality settings.

Before You Start

Prepare:

  • A GoPro HERO9 Black or newer with current stable firmware
  • A formatted SD card with enough free space
  • A charged battery or reliable continuous power arrangement
  • A short USB-C data cable—not a charge-only cable
  • A direct USB port on the booth PC where possible
  • FMX for Windows 2.0 or later

Close GoPro utilities, webcam applications, conferencing software, and other programs that may try to use the camera.

1. Prepare the GoPro

  1. Insert and format the SD card.
  2. Open the GoPro connection preferences.
  3. Set USB Connection to GoPro Connect, not MTP.
  4. Configure the Photo preset that FMX should use.
  5. Configure the Video preset, including resolution, frame rate, lens, profile, framing, and stabilization.
  6. Turn off features that could keep the camera continuously busy, such as an unwanted recording mode.
  7. Connect the camera to the Windows PC with the USB-C data cable and turn it on.

2. Select the GoPro in FMX

  1. Open Global Settings > Camera.

  2. Click Refresh after the camera is connected and powered on.

  3. Select the GoPro entry from the camera list.

  4. Review the GoPro Status card:

    • Connection
    • Model
    • Firmware
    • Battery
    • SD Card
  5. Click Refresh Status if the information does not update after changing the card or camera.

  6. Choose the required Rotation.

  7. Decide whether to enable Delete files from SD card after download.

  8. Leave Live View UDP Port at its default unless another program uses that port or Foto Master Support asks you to change it.

  9. Save the settings.

Automatic SD Card Cleanup

When Delete files from SD card after download is enabled, FMX removes only the file created for the current FMX capture and only after verifying the completed download.

FMX does not use this option to delete files that were already on the card before the FMX capture. Even so, test the full workflow before enabling automatic cleanup at a live event.

3. Build a GoPro Photo Workflow

A typical photo workflow is:

Live View Start → Take Photo → Preview Raw or Final Photo → Save Final Photo → Sharing or Printing

FMX commands the GoPro to capture a still, waits for the camera to finish encoding it, downloads the file from the SD card, and registers it as the session’s Raw Photo.

Do not unplug the camera or remove the SD card while the download is in progress.

4. Build a GoPro Video Workflow

A typical video workflow is:

Live View Start → Record Video Start → guest action or timed animation → Record Video Stop → Preview Raw or Final Video

GoPro video behavior:

  • Recording happens natively on the GoPro.
  • Audio comes from the GoPro microphones, not the Windows microphone selected for other camera types.
  • Live View may pause while the camera changes mode or encodes the completed recording.
  • FMX restarts the preview after the camera is ready.
  • Long GoPro recordings that are split into multiple card chapters are joined during download.

Allow enough workflow time after Record Video Stop for the camera to finalize and transfer large files.

5. Test Live View

  1. Add or run a Live View Start step.
  2. Confirm that the preview appears and uses the correct rotation.
  3. Leave it running for several minutes to check USB and power stability.
  4. Run one still capture and one short video.
  5. Confirm that Live View returns after each capture.

GoPro Live View uses a local UDP stream. The default starts at port 8554, and FMX can use the available preview ports in the 8554–8562 range.

Event-Day Checklist

  • GoPro Connect is still selected after the camera restarts.
  • The SD card is present, healthy, and has enough free space.
  • The Photo and Video presets have the intended quality settings.
  • The USB-C cable is secured and does not move when guests touch the booth.
  • Battery or continuous power is stable.
  • Model, battery, and SD Card status appear in FMX.
  • Live View, Take Photo, Record Video, Preview, and final delivery have all been tested.
  • Automatic deletion has been tested before being enabled.

Troubleshooting

The GoPro is not listed

  • Confirm USB Connection > GoPro Connect on the camera.
  • Insert an SD card and turn the camera fully on.
  • Try a known-good USB data cable and another direct PC port.
  • Close GoPro, webcam, meeting, and streaming applications.
  • Click Refresh, then restart FMX with the camera already connected if necessary.

Status appears, but capture fails

  • Check whether the GoPro reports that it is busy or still encoding.
  • Confirm that the SD card is writable and has free space.
  • Stop any recording started manually on the camera.
  • Reconnect the USB cable and repeat a short test.

Still capture works, but Live View is blank

  • Allow FMX through Windows Firewall.
  • Check whether another program is using UDP port 8554.
  • Keep the FMX port setting at its default unless support recommends another value.
  • Close VPN or security software temporarily during a controlled test if it blocks the local USB network interface.

Video downloads slowly

Large or high-resolution recordings take longer to finalize and transfer. Use a shorter test recording, verify the cable, and allow the workflow to remain on its waiting screen until download completes.

The GoPro uses the wrong resolution or lens

Change the active Photo or Video preset on the GoPro. These quality settings are not selected in FMX 2.0.53.

The SD card fills during an event

After completing a safe production test, enable Delete files from SD card after download. Continue monitoring storage from the GoPro Status card.
