Final Photo: When FMX Saves It and How It WorksUpdated 4 days ago

Overview

The Final Photo is the completed image that FMX produces based on your layout — including photos, overlays, filters, text, graphics, and signatures.
FMX is designed to save one Final Photo per session, updating it if needed, so you always end with the correct finished result.

When FMX Saves the Final Photo

FMX saves the Final Photo in two possible situations:

1. When Your Workflow Includes a “Save Final Photo” Step

If your workflow uses a Save Final Photo feature:

  • FMX saves the Final Photo exactly at that point.

  • This becomes the official Final Photo for the session.

  • FMX will not save again at the end of the workflow unless something changes later in the session.

2. Automatically at the End of the Workflow

If your workflow does not include a Save Final Photo feature step:

  • FMX automatically saves the Final Photo when the workflow finishes (including when exiting with ESC at the end).

  • This guarantees that every completed session produces a Final Photo.

How FMX Decides Whether to Re-Save or Update the Final Photo

FMX only saves the Final Photo when needed. If a Final Photo already exists, FMX will check whether anything has changed since it was last saved, such as:

  • A new RAW photo was captured

  • A filter or AI version changed

  • A user changed a photo selection in a carousel

  • A signature or drawing overlay was updated

If anything is newer than the previously saved Final Photo, FMX will re-render and update it.
If nothing has changed, FMX keeps the existing file.

What FMX Never Does

To avoid accidental or duplicate files:

  • FMX never saves the Final Photo during Preview.
The Preview step only shows you what the final layout will look like.
It does not create or write any files.

  • FMX never creates multiple Final Photos for the same session.
If another save is required, it simply updates the same file.

When the Final Photo Is Not Saved

FMX will not save a Final Photo if:

  • You press ESC before essential elements (like a photo or required overlay) are ready

  • The layout is missing or invalid

  • An unexpected error prevents rendering

In these cases, no Final Photo will be created.

Where the Final Photo Is Saved

FMX saves the Final Photo in your event’s FinalPhoto folder.

  • The file name includes the session ID and timestamp

  • If Cloud Sync is enabled, the Final Photo is automatically queued for upload after it is saved

How Preview Affects the Final Photo

The Preview screen allows guests to:

  • See the layout

  • Change photo selections

  • Change filters

  • Confirm or adjust their choices

However:

  • Preview does not save any Final Photo

  • It only records the guests’ choices so the correct Final Photo can be saved later

Saving only happens at the Save Final Photo step or at workflow end.

Practical Tips for Consistent Final Photo Saving

  • End the workflow normally to ensure the Final Photo is always created.

  • If using ESC, make sure all layout elements (photos, overlays, signatures) are already available.

  • Use the Save Final Photo workflow step if you want to control exactly where saving happens.

Troubleshooting

Didn’t get a Final Photo?

Most common reasons:

  1. The workflow was exited before photos or other required elements were ready.

  2. The layout referenced images that were missing or invalid.

  3. Preview was used, but the workflow never reached the save step or the workflow end.

Not seeing the file?

  • Check the event’s FinalPhoto folder.

  • Ensure Cloud Sync (if used) is enabled for Final Photos.

  • Confirm that your layout file and all referenced assets exist on the machine.
